FULL HOUSE for Afghanistan Forum

On May 30 over 120 people filled the community room in the main Berkeley Library for a forum entitled “Afghanistan: Promoting Alternatives to War. Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies and Humaira Gilzai of the Afghan Friends Network were the main speakers. Bennis laid out the tragic history of American military involvement in Afghanistan, the necessity for military withdrawal coupled with increased humanitarian aid and an emphasis on diplomatic solutions. Gilzai, a native of Afghanistan whose family left following the Soviet invasion, told stories about the struggles of Afghan women and put the condition of women in the historical context of her country. Bennis ended the session with a strong call for anti-war activists to rethink their advocacy given the public’s preoccupation with the economy. She said the most effective messages would make the connection between the costs of American military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and (increasingly Pakistan) and the drain on taxpayer money needed for domestic programs.

In an effort to bring power to the peaceful, Resolution Peace seeks to grow the peace movement with concrete actions and rapid response aimed at keeping the Democratic Party moving in the direction of ending the Iraq War and stopping an attack on Iran.  To implement this strategy the constituencies that sent the Democrats to Congress voice their support for Resolution Peace.  When a critical mass of the Democratic Clubs and progressive political organizations throughout America pass Resolution Peace and endorse the Responsible Plan the Democratic Congress will do what we ask. Critical mass will be reached through several tactics.
